Need just the right amount of anchor

Trying to figure out the right anchor chain length for my Hanse and realizing there's no one size fits all answer. I've read through a ton of anchor setup threads, and while the 5:1 or 7:1 scope rule keeps coming up, I still feel a bit unsure how much chain makes sense for my cruising plans. Most of my time will be in coastal waters with some occasional deeper anchorages. I'd like to have enough for peace of mind, but also don't want to go overboard and weigh the bow down, its just like I`m stuck between opposites

Do you use nylon after your chain or just all chain? I've got 38 meters of chain and 54 meters of rope on my Hanse 400. It helps keep the weight down, is easier on the windlass, and gives me more reach for deeper areas. I keep the rope stored separateley to keep it clean and easy to handle. Sometimes, I think I might have too much chain, though

There's no perfect chain length, but a 5:1 to 7:1 ratio is a good rule to follow. For coastal cruising, having 60 to 80 meters of 10mm chain should help you rest easy and keep your bow above water. If you're concerned about weight, try using a mix of chain and rope,that way you get the benefits of both. Anchoring is always a bit of a trade-off, just like owning a boat

Maybe aim for around 100–150 feet of chain? depending on your usual depth. Hope that helps!

I agree, a 5:1 to 7:1 anchor rode ratio looks good. Combining chain and rope offers a nice balance, mainly if you stick to coastal trips. At the end of the day, anchoring is a game of give and take.
